Privacy note. Every tool runs locally, but what it returns goes into the agent's model, which you choose. ask_library and the transcript tool return on-device text, and by default so does search_media: its hits carry transcript lines, summaries, on-screen text, and labels such as speaker or person. memory_search returns the conversations stored in the memory library it names, including chats you imported. library_status returns only counts and entitlement. To keep that text on your machine, set MEDIAFIND_MCP_ALLOW_CONTENT=0 in the server's environment: ask_library, get_transcript, memory_search and the Pro list_people tool then refuse with content_disabled, and search_media returns only where each hit is and how well it matched (file path, timestamp, score). memory_save and memory_reset keep working, and memory_reset only clears a memory library the agent filled itself: one holding a conversation you imported is refused and left as it is.

Set it up from the app

The MCP server is built into the MediaFind app, so there is nothing else to install. Open MediaFind and go to Settings → Connect to AI agents:

  • Claude Desktop — click Add to Claude Desktop, then restart Claude Desktop. MediaFind adds itself to Claude Desktop's config (or copy the JSON shown there and merge it in yourself).
  • Claude Code — copy the claude mcp add command shown there and run it in a terminal.
  • Cursor, Windsurf and other MCP clients — add a stdio server with the same command and arguments as the Claude Desktop JSON.

The agent searches the library you've built in the app, so add a folder in MediaFind first if you haven't yet.

What the command looks like

The server is MediaFind's own program, started with --mcp. For the Mac app in your Applications folder, the Claude Code command is:

Settings shows the exact command for your install, including where your library lives. The app can also print the block for other clients, e.g. /Applications/MediaFind.app/Contents/MacOS/MediaFind --mcp --print-config cursor (or vscode, windsurf, zed, codex, gemini-cli). Keep the absolute path: GUI-launched clients start from the window server with a bare login PATH, so a bare command that works in a terminal fails there — the most common cause of a server showing as "failed to start". On Linux, install the .deb rather than the AppImage: the AppImage runs from a temporary folder that is gone once it quits, so an agent couldn't start it later.

No pip package yet. MediaFind isn't installable from PyPI: the mediafind package there is a placeholder that holds the name, not MediaFind itself. pip install "mediafind[mcp]" and uvx --from "mediafind[mcp]" don't give you a working server — use the one built into the app.
