How to search Zoom recordings

The short answer

Zoom recordings are ordinary video and audio files. To search them by what was said, you need a transcript with timestamps. If you use Zoom's cloud recording, your plan may already generate one. If you record locally, run the files through a transcription tool and search the results, ideally one that searches all your calls at once.

Cloud recordings: check what Zoom gives you

Cloud recording is generally limited to paid Zoom accounts, and depending on your plan and your admin's settings, Zoom can generate an audio transcript for cloud recordings. If it's switched on, you can view the transcript alongside the recording in your Zoom web account and search within it.

The catch: features and settings vary by plan and change over time, the transcript lives in Zoom's cloud, and searching across many meetings at once is limited. If your recordings contain sensitive material, you may prefer not to rely on cloud processing at all.

Local recordings: find the files first

Local recordings are saved on your computer when the meeting ends. On a Mac they typically land in a Zoom folder inside Documents, with one subfolder per meeting; your recording settings in the Zoom app show the exact location. Each meeting usually produces an MP4 video and an M4A audio-only file.

Local recordings don't come with a searchable transcript, so you'll need to create one. The good news is that you already have the files, so nothing needs to be uploaded.

Tips and limitations

Keep the Zoom folder added and leave the app open after calls: MediaFind re-checks added folders about once a minute and indexes new recordings once they finish saving. Check your organization's policy and get consent before recording anyone; searching a recording doesn't change the rules about making it.
