How to search your Claude conversation history

The short answer

Scroll or search your recent chats in Claude, or, on a paid plan, ask Claude to search your past chats for you. For a complete copy you control, export your data from Settings → Privacy → Export data, then import the export into a tool that searches it on your computer, such as MediaFind Memory.

Option 1: Claude's own chat search

Anthropic's help center describes a feature that lets Claude search your previous conversations when you ask about them, for example "what did we decide about the venue last month?". It's listed for paid plans, on web, desktop and mobile, and can be switched off in Claude's memory settings. It searches chats outside projects, and within a project only that project's chats. Incognito chats aren't included.

That's convenient, but the search runs in Claude's cloud and only covers what's still in your account. It won't search your ChatGPT history or your notes at the same time.

Option 2: export your Claude data

Anthropic's help center lists the steps for individual Free, Pro and Max accounts, in the web app or Claude Desktop:

1. Click your initials in the lower left and choose Settings.
2. Open Privacy and click Export data.
3. Wait for an email with a download link. The help center says the link expires 24 hours after it's delivered, and you can request a new one.

Option 2, continued: what's in the export

The export includes your conversation data and account data. Inside the ZIP, conversations are in a conversations.json file, the same name ChatGPT uses for its export. It's complete but not pleasant to read directly. On Team and Enterprise plans, the help center says exports are requested by the organization's Primary Owner, not by individual members. Keep the ZIP somewhere safe; it holds everything you've typed.

Option 3: search it with MediaFind Memory

Memory is free, runs on your computer, and chats and notes don't count toward the free plan's 10 files.

1. Unzip your Claude export.
2. In MediaFind, add to Memory and choose the export's conversations.json. MediaFind tells Claude and ChatGPT exports apart by their contents.
3. Search by meaning, such as the pricing email draft, or by an exact word. Matching messages also appear in regular Find results, next to your recordings.
4. Ask a question. The answer lists the messages it read, or says your conversations don't cover it.
5. Export again next month and re-import. Unchanged conversations are skipped.

Keeping it tidy and private

With a local copy you can delete chats from your Claude account and still find what you worked out. In Memory you can export a library, delete a single conversation, or reset a whole library. Ask uses an on-device language model, so your questions and chats aren't sent anywhere. You can also bring in ChatGPT history and an Obsidian vault and search them together.
