How to make a highlight reel from a long video

The short answer

Work from the transcript, not the timeline. Read or search it for the strong lines, mark those moments, drop them in order onto a timeline, trim the edges, add captions, and export. Tools that suggest highlights for you speed up the first pass, but you'll still want to choose the final cut.

The manual method

Any editor can do the assembly. Rough length targets depend on where it's going, so check the platform you're posting to.

1. Transcribe the video so you can skim in minutes what took hours to record.
2. Decide the reel's purpose. A promo wants energy and a hook; a recap wants the key points in order.
3. Mark candidates: quotable lines, laughs, reveals, clear answers to a question. Aim for two or three times what you'll keep.
4. Assemble and trim. Cut each clip to start on the thought, not the breath before it.
5. Finish for the platform: captions for silent autoplay, and a vertical or square frame where that's the norm.
